The Framework
Understanding how emotional environments shape emotional development.
Our framework explains what sits beneath behaviour, why it matters and how we can support lasting change in children, families and ourselves.
1. The problem: we only see the surface
Behaviour is the outward expression of something deeper.
When we only focus on what we see, we miss the underlying emotions, meanings and beliefs that drive it.
To create change, we need to go deeper.

2. What shapes identity?
Identity is shaped over time through many influences. When these are positive and supportive, children develop confidence and resilience. When they are negative or overwhelming, children can struggle to cope.

Experiences
Life events, both the big moments and th esmall everyday ones.

Relationships
The connections we have with family, friends and others.

Emotional climate
The overall mood and tone of the environment we live in.

Repetition
What happens again and again becomes our normal.

Attachment
Feeling save, seen and loved builds a secure sense of self.
3. Emotional environments shape development.
Children don’t just need the right tools.
They need the right environment to use them in.
The emotional climate around a child influences how they think, feel and see themselves.

Children develop within environments.
They absorb the emotional atmosphere around them.

Parents & carers influence environments
Our words, reactions and regulation shape everyday experiences.

Co-parents influence environments
Conflict or cooperation impacts stability and emotional safety.

Conflict influences environments
Ongoing stress and conflict can impact whole-family wellbeing.
4. Different situations need different tools
That’s why we created four comprehensive pathways, designed to offer practical support tailored for every role you play in a child’s life, whether you are a parent, teacher, guardian, or mentor.
Each pathway is crafted to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced at different stages of development, ensuring that you have the tools, resources and guidance necessary to foster a nurturing and enriching environment for the child.

5. The Mindful Explorer Framework
At the heart of our work with children is a simple, practical framework that can be used every day.
These five foundations help children and parents alike to understand and manage emotions, build resilience and grow self-belief.

NOTICE
Become aware of feelings, body sensations and what’s happening right now.

NAME
Identify and name emotions and feelings to understand them better

REGULATE
Learn simple tools to calm, soothe and manage big feelings.

REFLECT
Make sense of experiences and learn from them.

GROW
Build confidence, resilience and self-belief over time.
This method is the foundation of our resources for children, parents and schools.
6. Why this matters
When we understand the deeper processes behind behaviour and stress, we can respond with empathy instead of frustration, connection instead of control, and curiosity instead of criticism.
Emotional strength doesn’t develop in isolation.
It develops through relationships, experiences and emotional environments.
“Small Moments, repeated with consistency and care, create lasting change.”

7. The role of the parent
Children develop in relationship. What matters is not getting every moment right, but rather fostering an environment where they feel loved, supported, and understood.
It is through shared experiences, both challenging and joyous, that children learn about trust, empathy, and resilience. Instead of fixating on perfection, we should celebrate the small victories and the process of growth itself, understanding that every interaction contributes to their overall development and character formation.
What matters is creating an emotional environment they can return to again and again.

Connection
Feeling seen, heard and valued.

Consistency
Predictable routines and steady responses.

Safety
Emotional and physical safety to explore and grow.

Repair
Working through ruptures and strengthening relationships.
8. When dynamics are more complex
The same principles still apply when life becomes more complicated.
Whether families are navigating separation, conflict, illness, financial stress or major transitions, emotional development still takes place within an environment.

Co-Parenting
Supporting children to feel supported across two homes.

Family Conflict
Ongoing stress and conflict can impact emotional wellbeing.

Major Changes
